PERCH  HABITAT

This is a run down on what needs to be done as described by Jeff Grendler, SD Game & Fish.

This is what is done.  Tree with rebar in base of tree goes into cardboard tube.  Tube gets filled up with concrete.  Trees get placed into the lake.

This is what already is on hand:  100 Christmas trees; card board tubes to hold trees to be filled with concrete; and rebar.

      This is what is needed:

Concrete 1 cubic yard

First thing that needs to get done: Cut rebar into 11 inch pieces.  Cut cardboard tubes into 7 to 10 inch lengths, chain saws used to do this will go through three chainsaw blades.  Drill holes through tree base to fit rebar and insert rebar.   Next: Place tree with rebar in cardboard tube base and stand along fence as straight as possible.  Pour concrete with shovel into cardboard base.  Let sit for two days to harden.  Place in water in about 8-10 different spots (GFP).

What is needed from the Association is three to four chain saws with good blades, cost share for concrete, drill with drill bit, hammer to pound in rebar through base of tree, hand saw or hatchet to trim base of tree, and the MANPOWER.

This will take probably about 6 hours to accomplish.

Ideally we will be looking for at least 10 or more volunteers.  Randy Pitts, Jeff Grendler and another Officer will all be there to help.  This will be done at the Park.

HABITAT  WORK  DAY

Date set for April 12th  at 9am   with April 19th as back up in case of rain on the 12th.  The sooner we get these in the water the better for perch spawning.  The Association will furnish noon lunch which  will be served at the work area for the volunteers.  Please call Janie 627-5466 or email oakwood@itctel.com if you can help out on the 12th so we will have a count as to who will all be there.

Directory of Residents

A Directory will be provided to the paid 2008 members of Oakwood Lakes Development Association.  Upon payment of your membership dues of $20.00 you will receive a directory listing the residents of East and West Oakwood and the resort area.  If you have had a changes in your information please let Janie Wittmeier know so that the corrections can be made in the 2008 directory.  In 2007 we had  64  paid  members.

Scuba Divers Fixed Aeration line on 9/30/07

Someone neglected to take care in moving out their boat lift or dock and broke the aeration line. Therefore two scuba divers needed to be hired to repair the line.  The two divers were DJ York and Chad Christianson. It was a Cold Windy and Rainy day.  They were in the water by 1:30pm and at 2:15pm they were out of the water and getting their suits off.   Cost to repair the line $300.00  plus cost of repair materials.  BUOYS will  be PLACED  over the AERATION LINE out from the pump shed.  If putting in your docks or boat lifts prior to the buoys being put in place, PLEASE stay out far enough so as not to catch and damage the aeration lines. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Ditch Clean Up

Saturday May 3rd  – 9am, meet at the Shelter located at Wagon Wheel Resort. Need volunteers to help with the 3 miles of ditch.

New Motor Installed

December 2007 the Marathon motor that was purchased in October 2006 burned out and needed to be replaced. This is the motor on the east side.   With the approval of the Board of Directors, Larry and I headed to Sioux Falls to get a new motor. Decided to purchase a GE brand 5 hp which had a higher torque and was an all cast motor at the price of $335.16.  Larry installed the motor on Monday December 24th but when starting up the motor it ran clock wise instead of counter clock wise.  With no clue how to get that changed he called on the assistance of Dennis DeBoer.  So on Christmas day night Dennis and Larry headed to the pump shed and Dennis got the wires switched around for the motor to run counter clock wise and the motor is running great.   The motor on the west side has been making a noise for some time now and may need to check it out.  A big thanks to the help of Larry and Dennis, the aeration system remained in operation through the winter.

East   Lake   Zero   Oxygen

As per Jeff Grendler, Oxygen levels on East Lake were down to zero early March.  Subsequently they believe there is probably significant fish kill on East Lake . He states they will not find out how severe until ice is out, when they will do some test netting to determine how severe.  They will know more in late April.

FUND  RAISER REPORT

2007 was the 10th year of the Football Book Fund Raiser.  It has been a very successful fund raiser for the Association starting out in l998 with the printing of 200 football books to 500 books printed  in 2007. 30 books go to the advertisers. The remaining  470 books were all sold  at $10.00 each.  Weekly winnings of $2,250.00 was paid out over the 18 game period.  Proceeds of this fund raiser help with the cost of operation and maintenance of the aeration system.  Thanks to the advertisers and to the 470 people purchasing the books.  Thanks to all who sold all the books.

Janie Wittmeier, Secretary, Oakwood Lakes Development Association.  4/5/08 150 printed and delivered or mailed to members and non-members of Oakwood Lakes Development Assocation.
