In South Dakota, many lakes used for recreational purposes have
little or no information documented about their quality and health
safety. The East Dakota Water Development District started Dakota
Water Watch in 2007 in an effort to establish a formalized program to
train citizen monitors to gather information about South Dakota
waters. Data collected by citizen monitors would help fill gaps in
existing data as well as highlight lakes and streams that may need
additional testing and attention.

The primary goal of the Dakota Water Watch program was to see if
citizen volunteers could successfully and accurately collect water
quality data, especially bacteriological data.
